Repinning Seasonic PRIME 8-pins to one 12VHPWR: sense wire sanity check

Post by RGBFirstTimer »

First post here, so be gentle. I’ve been sleeving extensions for a few months and decided to try a full custom 12VHPWR cable for my RTX 4080. PSU is a Seasonic PRIME TX-850, and I want to go from two PSU-side 8-pin ports to one 12VHPWR. The main thing I’m stuck on is the four tiny sense wires. The pinout I found says two go to ground, one floats, and one is tied to a 12V line? That sounds wrong. My multimeter beeps where I expected, but I haven’t plugged it into the card yet. Do I trust the pinout, or is there a better way to test before I fry something?

Honestly, making a 12VHPWR as your first full cable is jumping into the deep end. Those tiny pins are called sense lines for a reason; the GPU reads them to figure out how much current it can pull. If the card sees a valid sense combination, it’ll boot; if not, it’ll either refuse to start or trip the PSU. I’d run the adapter that came in the box or buy Seasonic’s own 12VHPWR cable if your PRIME is on the compatibility list. If you insist on DIY, get the actual PSU-side pinout from Seasonic, not random forum pinouts, and use proper HCS terminals.

Welcome. You’re right to pause before inserting that cable.

The 12VHPWR connector has the 12 large power pins plus four small sideband/sense pins in the middle. For an ATX 2.x PSU like the PRIME TX-850, a 12VHPWR adapter/cable is usually built so the GPU sees a valid 600W capability. In the adapters I’ve inspected, the two pins used for sense are bonded to ground at the PSU side, while the remaining sideband lines are left unconnected. If you tie a sense line to 12V, as that pinout suggests, stop. That could appear as an invalid signal or, worse, damage something.

A multimeter continuity check only tells you where a wire goes; it doesn’t tell you whether the pinout is correct for the intended load. You need the mechanical map of the PSU-side connector for your exact unit. Seasonic’s PSU-side 8-pin pinout is not interchangeable with Corsair or EVGA. Some PRIME units have a native 12VHPWR cable available from Seasonic; if the compatibility checker says yes, I’d buy that and sleeve the visible length of that cable if you care about cosmetics.

If you absolutely want to build your own, use a known-good pinout from the PSU manufacturer, genuine Molex Mini-Fit HCS terminals, and a proper crimper. Even then, two 8-pin ports on a 4080 is in the “works, but not much headroom for transients” category. Test on a benchtop before installing in your main rig.

Thanks, both. Yeah, that 12V pin on a sense line immediately made me nervous, so I’m glad I asked. I’m looking at Seasonic’s cable now but it’s out of stock at my usual shop. Do you think I can at least use my sleeved cable with the card powered off just to test fit? I also saw someone on Reddit crimping sense wires to the PSU-side ground, and their card worked, but I guess that only tells me their specific pinout was right. For now the stock adapter is still in the box, looks terrible but works.

Fitment test with no power is fine, just don’t plug it in. The card won’t care about unpowered cable fit, but make sure no pins are being pushed out when the connector seats. Reddit posts are not a validation bench. Half the time it’s one fixed pinout screenshot and three people guessing.

If you do test the Seasonic cable, check that the 12VHPWR connector is fully seated. The edge of the connector body should be flush with the card connector shell. You’d be surprised how many failures are just a connector that’s 1-2 mm proud because the latch didn’t click over the tab. Also, don’t solder those sense terminals.
